At S&S Interiors, we take pride in creating beautiful, functional spaces. For a recent project in the serene village of Quogue on Long Island, we were called upon to enhance a spectacular waterfront home.
The Design Brief: Balancing Light and View
Our clients had a clear vision: a modern-coastal aesthetic that felt both luxurious and relaxed. The space features:
A magnificent vaulted ceiling with exposed wood beams.
An open-concept great room seamlessly blending the living area and kitchen.
Large sliding glass doors that frame stunning water views.
A classic coastal color palette of deep navy blue, warm wood tones, and crisp, clean whites.
The primary challenge was managing the bright Long Island sun. It was crucial to protect the beautiful furniture (like that massive navy sectional and custom wood table) and create a comfortable environment without sacrificing the incredible vistas.

We recommended the perfect solution to meet these goals: Hunter Douglas Duette Honeycomb Shades. We chose a beautiful, textured, neutral-toned fabric in an semi-opaque cell structure.
Why Duette Was the Right Choice for This Home
Here’s why these shades are a perfect fit:
1. Unbeatable Energy Efficiency Quogue summers can be bright and warm. The Duette’s signature honeycomb construction traps air, providing a superior layer of insulation. This helps keep the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, reducing energy consumption.
2. Beautifully Filtered Natural Light The largest sliding glass doors on the left in image_0.png are where the Duette shades were installed. They transform harsh direct sunlight into a soft, ambient glow. This diffuse light reduces glare on the wall-mounted television, makes the open-plan space feel warmer, and highlights the textures of the furnishings without over-exposing the room.
3. UV Protection This is perhaps one of the most critical factors. Standard windows only offer minimal UV protection,leaving fine art and expensive upholstery vulnerable. Our installation of Duette shades provides a significant barrier,protecting the navy sofas and custom wood finishes from sun-induced fading.
4. Maintaining the View and Sleek Profile While privacy and light control are paramount, you don't want to hide a Quogue view. Duette shades stack tightly at the top of the window frame, meaning when fully raised (as seen on the right side of the space for maximum airiness), they are almost invisible, leaving the view completely uninhibited. We carefully coordinated the valance and hardware colors to match the crisp white trim, making the shades a subtle, elegant addition rather than an interruption.
